How Can We Trust What the Bible Says?

Since the Bible is the primary source for what Christians believe, it's very important that we know whether or not what we're reading is true.  How can we trust what it says?  How do we know it hasn't been altered over the years?  Why do we believe it's the word of God, since it was written by humans?
